Using skills they've acquired while in the line of duty, about 150 firefighters from across Ontario, Quebec, and the U.S. suited up in a race against one another.

The FireFit competition is one of strength and time.

Firefighters try to beat the clock while climbing stairs with 42 lbs on their shoulders, dragging heavy hoses full of water, and pulling a life-sized dummy wearing full gear in the blazing sun.

"When you get halfway it's like pulling 200 pounds so it's hard on the legs," says Ottawa firefighter Denis Charbonneau.

John Cook of Greater Napanee says it is about team comraderie more than anything else.

"It's an excuse to get out and train and stay in shape for when the real thing happens," he says.

The competition does not discriminate. Firefighters of both genders and all ages come together to represent their region and have a chance at the title.

David McCue is a 62-year-old Quinte West firefighter. He says he competes to send a clear message to the people back home.

"I just want people to know that I'm capable of doing my job. When the bell rings, I'm ready to roll," says McCue.

This weekend's winners will head to the Canadian finals in Medicine Hat, Alberta happening in September.
