About 35 people were evacuated from the Days Inn on Rideau Street in downtown Ottawa after a fire started in the hotel's laundry room Friday morning.

The blaze started in an industrial dryer in the basement beneath the front lobby just before 11 a.m.

Firefighters say the blaze caused heavy smoke in the basement. Smoke also spread to the stairwells and main floor. None of the guest rooms were affected.

Firefighters say the dryer was destroyed and the laundry room was damaged by smoke and heat.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
