Two women in their 70s are dead following a head-on crash near Kemptville Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened on County Road 43 east of the Meadowglen Circle intersection just after 5 o'clock.

Police say a westbound Hyundai entered the eastbound lanes to avoid two vehicles waiting to turn and struck the eastbound Buick head-on.

Police identify the victims as 76-year-old Marian McFadden of Smiths Falls and 78-year-old Jacqueline Jeffreys of Burritts Rapids.  72-year-old John McFadden and 78-year-old Howard Jeffreys were seriously injured.

The two women in the Hyundai, 20-year-old Clare Cooke and 18-year-old Jennifer Cooke, both of Kemptville, were airlifted to Ottawa hospital.
