The Canadian soldier who died Saturday of non-combat injuries in Afghanistan was based out of CFB Petawawa.

The Canadian military said Sunday the soldier has been identified as Master Cpl. Francis Roy of Rimouski, Que.

Brig.-Gen. Dean Milner, commander of the Canadian task force, said Roy was responsible for transport of troops and equipment with the Canadian special forces.

He was on his first overseas deployment, with special forces and was found by fellow soldiers at a forward operating base in Kandahar city early Saturday.

His age was not released, and no further details were available as the incident is under investigation by military police.

Roy is the 157th Canadian to die in relation to the mission in Afghanistan.
