More than 160 artists from around the world displayed their work in different spots across Ottawa. This is part of the first-ever “Nuit Blanche,” a festival celebrating visual art in the street.

“Contemporary art is art that makes people reflect which is very important. I believe art should be a reflection of our society.” said Yves Larocque, Nuit Blanche.

The theme is "La Vie est Belle" meaning life is beautiful.

Artists had to work with that theme to create displays ranging from paintings and performances to concrete elephants.

“These elephants represent all life on planet and they’re growing in numbers,” said Christopher Griffin, artist. The exhibit featuring these concrete elephants were inspired by a trip to India.

The art was featured in various locations throughout the ByWard Market and Hintonburg with each viewers giving their own interpretation of each piece.

“It looks like there were huge flies that went through it and the spider just didn’t have time to catch them,” said one fan. “I’m not from Ottawa but it’s pretty cool. I wish they did this in Edmonton.”
