A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a Christmas Day assault in Ottawa's west end.

The man is alleged to have broken into a residence to take hockey equipment. The owner, a 49-year-old male, arrived at the suspect's home to retrieve the property.

The suspect than threw gasoline on the victim's face, struck him with a wooden shank, and smashed a car window, according to Ottawa police. The victim was treated and released from hospital the same day with head and leg injuries.

Tony Romano was charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, death threats, break and enter, and mischief.

He was arrested without incident on Tuesday and was scheduled to make a court appearance on Wednesday.
