Ottawa and Gatineau's police chiefs will join gay rights leaders for a demonstration on the Alexandria Bridge on Friday to commemorate the 1989 murder of a man who was killed because his attackers thought he was gay.

Alain Brosseau, 33, was killed when he was pushed off the bridge on Aug. 21, 1989. The attack happened when he was on his way home from a late shift at the Chateau Laurier.

His killing followed a rash of uninvestigated murders and attacks on gay men in Ottawa's Major Hill's Park. Four men were later convicted in connection with his death.

To honour Brosseau's life, the police chiefs, along with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, will span the bridge at dusk to demonstrate that gay bashing no longer goes unreported or unnoticed in the capital.

The group will meet at the amphitheatre at the National Gallery of Canada on Sussex Drive at 7 p.m.
