TORONTO - Criminal charges against former Ontario Attorney-General Michael Bryant go before a Toronto court for the first time today.

Michael Bryant is not expected to be in court as it's expected the proceedings will be routine and the case will merely be put over until a later date.

The former provincial cabinet minister is charged with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving of a vehicle causing death in fatal accident involving a cyclist on Aug. 30.

Darcy Allan Sheppard died after he was seen hanging onto the side of a car in downtown Toronto -- police said it followed some sort of altercation with the driver of the car.

Bryant has said publicly that he's innocent.

To avoid any suggestions of political interference, the Ontario government has hired top Vancouver criminal lawyer Richard Peck to prosecute the case.
