An east Ottawa elementary school will resume classes on Tuesday after a watermain break forced the school to close Monday morning.

Staff at Vincent Massey Public School sent about 650 students home late Monday morning after a watermain break on Smyth Road cut off water to the school, as well as several homes in the area.

The city said water service was back to normal at the school, as well as about 25 homes by 5 p.m. The watermain break is likely due to the cold weather.

Traffic on parts of Smyth Road was rerouted Monday morning while crews worked to repair the watermain, which was installed in 1955.
