PHILADELPHIA - Danny Briere completed a hat trick with 5.3 seconds left in overtime to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 victory Saturday over the Ottawa Senators.
The victory was the second straight for the Flyers, and it snapped Ottawa's four-game winning streak.
The teams traded goals in the third period. Briere scored his second of the game and his 12th goal of the season, which deflected off Ottawa defender Chris Phillips' stick, tying the game at 2-2.
About three minutes earlier, Ottawa's Bobby Butler had given the Senators a short-lived 2-1 lead, poking in a rebound. Ottawa tied the game on a tap-in by Milan Michalek 11:05 into the second period.
Midway into the period the Senators had been swarming the Philadelphia net, resulting in a two-man advantage. Seven seconds after Philadelphia's Matt Carle was whistled for tripping -- with Braydon Coburn already in the penalty box for holding -- Michalek made the Flyers pay with his 20th goal of the season.
Briere scored the first of his two goals off a rebound of his own shot 11:05 into the first period. The centre had a clear shot on Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson, but he actually fanned on it and the puck dribbled at the net. With Ottawa's defence seemingly frozen, Briere quickly followed his shot and poked it over Anderson's left shoulder.
Briere's goal was made possible by the great skating of Jakub Voracek, whose nifty moves drew the Ottawa defence to him, leaving Briere wide open on the right of the Ottawa net.
