A suspended Mountie accused of killing an Ottawa police officer will undergo a mental health assessment to determine if he is not criminally responsible for the crimes he's charged with committing.

Kevin Gregson will be sent on Monday to the maximum security wing at the Penetanguishene psychiatric institution, located on Georgian Bay, about 150 kilometres northwest of Toronto.

Gregson's new lawyer Geraldine Castle-Trudel argued for the 30-day mental health assessment during her first court appearance with her client on Friday.

Although Gregson has already been found fit to stand trial, he has never undergone this type of assessment, which will determine if he can be held criminally responsible for his actions.

Gregson is accused of stabbing Const. Eric Czapnik to death outside the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital in late December 2009.

Gregson, who has suffered from mental health problems in the past, was suspended with pay from the RCMP in 2006 after he was accused of threatening a Morman bishop with a knife.

He pleaded guilty to those accusations and his pay was revoked in April 2007.
