OTTAWA -- Ottawa Police have laid a mischief charge after dozens of headstones were knocked over a the Notre Dame Cemetery on Montreal Road.

People who visited the graves of their loved ones over the weekend noticed the damage.

Most of the apparent vandalism happened on the northwest corner of the grounds.

A witness tells CTV News by email at least one hundred stones were affected.

"No less than 100 gravestones were overturned, mostly in section 40 or 41. We have also noted that dozens of other headstones in many other sections were also on the ground. For the most part, the headstones are found toppled over, but some are bruised and a few are broken. Small statues of the Virgin Mary and little cherubs are broken," J.Y. Pelletier said.

Police told CTV News on Monday that they believe the stones were knocked over Friday evening.

Richard Crispin, 42, is facing one count of mischief.

CTV News was unable to get in touch with staff at the cemetery Monday.

By Tuesday afternoon, many stones had been righted, according to CTV Ottawa viewer Jeff Legault.

"I managed to to speak with one of the workers from the company reinstalling the stones. They righted about 80 stones so far today," he said.
