Ministry of Labour investigators were in Ottawa Thursday to piece together the circumstances leading to the death of an Ottawa contractor who was killed by two large cement slabs.

Ben Long, 50, and a colleague were working on a porch at a home in Sandy Hill when two pieces of cement came loose. The cement slabs fell on Long's chest, trapping him for about 40 minutes.

Although Long was initially able to speak to paramedics, he lost vital signs before firefighters managed to free him. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His co-worker injured his ankle in the incident.

Long, who was also known as 'Benny', had worked at Hoskins Restoration Services Inc. for years.

Long leaves behind his wife, Francis. The couple loved to travel and just got back from a trip. They would have been married for 10 years in August. The couple had no children.

So far this year, 66 workers have died on job sites across Canada.
