TORONTO - The opposition is saying Ontario's "arrogant" Liberal government will pay the same price as B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell for the HST.
Campbell resigned after his popularity dropped to single digits as a result of his government's bungled introduction of the tax.
That's left many wondering whether there's a ticking political bomb in store for Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.
The Liberals hope to win a third straight majority next year, but recent polls suggest McGuinty will have a hard time hanging on to his job.
NDP leader goes on attack
Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath went on the attack in the legislature today, calling the Liberals arrogant and predicting they'll suffer the same fate as Campbell.
Acting premier and Finance Minister Dwight Duncan dismissed those suggestions, insisting that the HST will create jobs and promote economic growth in Ontario.
The tax, which took effect this summer in both provinces, sparked a major backlash in B.C. and an anti-HST movement that forced the government to call a fall referendum on the tax.
That hasn't materialized in Ontario, which is heading into an election next October.
Campbell resigned Wednesday, saying the HST issue was making it too difficult for him to get his job done.
