The mayors of several West Quebec towns have teamed up to try to buy the Wakefield Steam Train to ensure it keeps running in the region.

The owner of the historic tourist attraction has it up for sale.

Fearing it will be purchased and moved from the region, the mayors of Chelsea, Lapeche and Gatineau are working to find a way to buy it and keep the train here.

The Wakefield Steam Train adds about $10 million and about 100 mostly part-time jobs every year to the local economy.

The steam train's owner, Jean Gauthier, made the decision to put the train up for sale this spring after problems with the Quebec government's maintenance of the tracks.

The train was parked early in May after a landslide was spotted near the railroad tracks in Chelsea, Que.

The Wakefield Steam Train - which carried 56,000 passengers in 2007 - was the last train of its kind to operate in Canada.
