The mayor of Mississippi Mills says a councillor died trying to protect his family.

Councillor Bernard Cameron was shot and killed at his home on Strathburn Street in Almonte Thursday morning.

His daughter Sarah Cameron was also injured and is recovering in hospital.

Mayor Shaun McLaughlin says he was told Bernard tried to shield is daughter and was killed.

“I’m pretty sure when all the forensic evidence comes in it’s going to probably show our friend Bernard died a hero,” McLaughlin said. “I’m pretty sure he stepped in front of his daughter to save her and risked his own life doing it."

The alleged shooter, Sarah’s former partner, is believed to have died of self-inflicted injuries in hospital on Thursday.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the Cameron family. Staff members at Almonte Country Haven, where Sarah works, are also accepting donations.

The police investigation into the sequence of events continues.
