Mayor Jim Watson wants Canada Post to remind employees to stay out of Ottawa’s bike lanes.

In an open letter to CEO Deepak Chopra, Watson asks Canada Post to instruct all of its employees to operate in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act.

The Crown Corporation has come under fire for parking in bike lanes in Toronto. A parking enforcement officer in Toronto told the Toronto Star that Canada Post has the most infractions for parking in bike lanes.

Watson says he wants “official assurance” that Canada Post employees are aware that obstructing cycling lanes is always dangerous and not an acceptable practice.”

“When a Canada Post vehicle obstructs a cycling lane it further exacerbates traffic congestion, particularly in the downtown core,” Watson said.

The letter also says the City of Ottawa is committed to working with Canada Post to find operational solutions to specific delivery challenges.
