Ottawa police are continuing their investigation into Thursday morning's deadly shooting at a ByWard Market bar that left a 26-year-old Ottawa man dead.

Mohamed Jama Ali, who was known to police, was shot in the stomach when a hail of bullets was fired into Bar 56. He later died in hospital.

The attack occurred as bar staff were attempting to break up a fight. Witnesses said that a black suspect fired four shots. An off-duty bouncer was hit in the arm and has been released from care.

Police will not confirm if Ali was a member of Ottawa's Ledbury-Banff Cripps gang, known for involvement with drugs, weapons and prostitution.

The murder remained on the minds of bar staff and patrons Thursday night in one of Ottawa's most popular entertainment districts.

"It's kind of nerve-wracking because the shooting just happened that far away," said Heather McBride, who works nearby. "It could have happened when we were getting off work."

But the shootings remain an isolated incident, said Jasna Jennings, the executive director of the ByWard Market Business Improvement Association.

"It was a total shock because this is out of the ordinary," Jennings told CTV Ottawa. "This isn't something the businesses are used to dealing with, (and) it's definitely not something customers and visitors are used to seeing."
