A Montreal man who was shot by Ottawa police after a brief pursuit earlier this week has died of his injuries.

The province's Special Investigations Unit says Richard Bastien, 43, was armed with a handgun when he was shot by police after refusing to pull over on Highway 417 early Wednesday evening.

Police say Bastien's vehicle matched a description that was filed in relation to an attempted murder in the city's west end earlier that day.

Prior to the shooting, Ottawa police responded to a 911 call at a home on Bearhill Road where 65-year-old Rainer Elsner was suffering from several gunshot wounds. He is currently recovering in hospital.

A post mortem on Bastien's body is scheduled for Saturday.

The SIU is called in whenever police are involved in incidents involving the public which result in death or serious injury. Seven investigators are assigned to the case.
