Montreal police are investigating after a 35-year-old man was shot and killed by Quebec provincial police east of Ottawa on Sunday.

The shooting occurred when police officers responded to a 911 call in Papineauville, located about 50 kilometres east of Ottawa.

A police spokesperson said the victim was shot several times after he allegedly charged at police officers with a sharp object. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Montreal investigators were called in to probe the shooting because Quebec provincial police cannot investigate fatal incidents involving their own officers.
