There were hugs and tears in the Ottawa courtroom Monday as friends and family said goodbye to Kareem Alli.
Alli has been found guilty for his role in a Barrhaven street racing accident that killed his friend Christian William two years ago.
Crown attorney, Matthew Humphreys, wanted to put Alli behind bars for four years. He says the 19-year-old has shown a lack of remorse and understanding of the impact his actions have had on the community.
Humphreys referred to a party Alli recently posted on Facebook. It was there Alli allegedly told friends: "I'm going on a little vacation…so let's do it big for one of my last nights to get crazy for a while!"
Defence lawyer Sean May says Alli now realizes his word choice was not appropriate.
May called him a respectful young man who has the backing of family and friends.
The judge concluded Williams would still be alive without Alli's participation in the race.
