A 25-year-old man convicted of killing an Ottawa woman while she visited Barbados is sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Terry Schwarzfeld, 60, received a fatal blow to the back of her head as she walked along a popular Barbados beach with her daughter-in-law Luana Cotsman on Feb. 28.

The women were approached by Curtis Foster who demanded cash. However, the women didn't have any. Foster then grabbed a nearby piece of wood and clubbed the women.

Although Cotsman survived the attack, Schwarzfeld never regained consciousness. She was initially treated at a hospital in Barbados and was later airlifted to an Ottawa hospital. She died of her injuries last March.

The man convicted of killing Schwarzfeld had a long criminal record before the attack. Prosecutors were seeking a jail term of 16 to 20 years.
