Another passerby has been beaten after trying to stop a crime in progress, this time in Ottawa's Byward Market early Sunday.

Ottawa police said they responded to a large fight around 3 a.m. Sunday near Cumberland Street and George Street, where several men were assaulting another man.

A 28-year-old male passerby intervened to try and stop the assault when the group's attention turned to him, knocking him unconscious and stealing his cellphone.

Police said five men are charged with aggravated assault with one, 19-year-old Dominik Montgiraud, also charged with robbery.

The victim was taken to the Civic campus of the Ottawa hospital with serious but non life-threatening head injuries, according to police.

This incident follows the death of a man one week after he was attacked while trying to stop a pumpkin theft in Gatineau.
