Police in the Outaouais say a 50-year-old Ottawa man died hours after he refused medical attention when he crashed his ATV near a dragway in the Pontiac.

Police found John MacPhail lying outside a trailer at the Luskville Dragway, located about 40 kilometres west of Gatineau, just before 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Although rescuers tried to revive MacPhail, he was pronounced dead in hospital.

Police discovered injuries on MacPhail's body when they found him and initially called the death suspicious.

Witnesses told police MacPhail rolled his ATV into a ditch two hours earlier and was not wearing a helmet.

An autopsy has since revealed the injuries that killed him were consistent with the ATV crash. Police no longer consider the death suspicious. Investigators say alcohol may have been a factor.
