A man is dead and two are in hospital after a house fire in western Ottawa Friday morning.

Ottawa Fire Services said a passerby saw smoke coming from the two-storey house on Cavan Street. Fire crews were called to the scene around 7 a.m. by an OC Transpo driver who stopped to help.

When firefighters arrived, the owner's son told them his father was still inside. Firefighters found him without vital signs on the second floor and gave him CPR on the front lawn until paramedics arrived.

Sixty-three-year-old Ole Hanson was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"The son was trying to get the father but the father collapsed," said neighbour Diane Dujmovic. "He couldn't get back to him and we told him 'don't go back in'. It's hard to say don't go back in."

Hanson's girlfriend suffered a broken ankle when she jumped from a second floor window, according to Marc Messier from Ottawa Fire Services.

Hanson's sister and her 11-year-old daughter escaped from the basement unharmed.

His sister Eva Bourguignon said Hanson was an elevator mechanic with Schindler Elevator for 40 years.

"You need to know he was wonderful," she said.

Ottawa Fire Services said the fire started at the rear of the home on the second floor. The neighbouring home suffered $25,000 of heat damage to its exterior.

Ottawa police said that Cavan Street is closed between Raven Street and Larose Street. They are assisting in the investigation.

Another home caught fire around suppertime, this one on Old Carp Road.

Fire services said 76 firefighters and 26 vehicles were on scene around 5:30 p.m. from a call that came in about half an hour earlier.

There was $200,000 in damage to the home, but no injuries. Messier said nobody was home at the time and they believe the fire started outside at the back of the house.

Crews were able to save much of the house's contents, as well as a tree that would have spread the fire to the next house over.
