A 57-year-old man who was attacked while trying to prevent the theft of a pumpkin at a Gatineau grocery store has died in hospital.

Lt. Steve Dessureault of the Gatineau Police confirmed the death Thursday night.

The man suffered serious head injuries on September 29 after trying to stop a young man from stealing a pumpkin from an IGA store in Aylmer, west of downtown Gatineau.

He was biking with his wife when he saw the theft in progress. When he asked the other man to put the pumpkin back, a fight broke out.

A 19-year-old man has already been charged with assault causing bodily harm relating to the incident.
