A man is dead after crashing into a group of cows on a foggy road east of Ottawa Tuesday night.

Hawkesbury OPP said a he was driving on County Road 16 near Riceville around 10:20 p.m. when he hit the cows, which were on the paved part of the road.

The 24-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, with his male passenger suffering minor injuries.

Emergency vehicles responding to the crash also struck cows on the rural road.

The crash is under investigation by the OPP's technical collision team and the coroner's office.

Another crash involving farm animals happened on Highway 401 overnight.

Westbound lanes were closed west of Carman Road near Morrisburg after a tractor-trailer rolled over and spilled its load of chickens.

The highway has since re-opened.
