A 60-year-old Ottawa man is charged with aggravated sexual assault and forcible confinement after a woman reported she was sexually assaulted and held against her will at a Centretown apartment building over the weekend.

Police say the woman was allegedly held for several hours beginning late Sunday night and into Monday morning.

The lead investigator on the case would not confirm where in Centretown the alleged attack occurred, only that it happened in an apartment building and the victim and the suspect are known to each other.

The woman, who apparently suffered injuries in the attack, reported the incident shortly after it took place, said Det.-Const. Dave West.

Police arrested Ladislav Cech in connection with the incident on Wednesday.

Cech made a brief court appearance in Ottawa on Thursday, and was held in custody until his next court appearance via video link on Aug. 18.

West said Cech has never been charged with any previous incidents in Ottawa. However, he would not say if the accused has a previous criminal record.

Although two other sexual assaults have been reported in Centretown in recent weeks, police say they don't believe they are related to the weekend attack.

"There's no indication that this incident is related to any other sexual assault we are investigating at this time," West said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Ottawa police at 613-236-1222, ext. 5944, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477 (TIPS).
