Ottawa police have charged a 25-year-old man following a South Ottawa crash that sent a 43-year-old woman to hospital in critical condition.

Emergency crews were called to Heron Rr. and Riverside Dr. around 11:30 Friday night, shortly after a pick-up truck collided with a car.

The driver of the pick-up truck fled the scene on foot, but was arrested by officers a short time after with the help of a police dog.

Paramedics say the 43-year-old driver of the car was unconscious when they got there, but regained consciousness as they treated her.

Ottawa Fire crews removed the roof of the vehicle so paramedics could get her out of the car.

Paramedics say she suffered a serious head injury and severe facial trauma and was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Ottawa police have charged 25-year-old Kyle Senk with several offences, including impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, exceeding 80 milligrams blood alcohol level while operating a motor vehicle and causing an accident with bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Police closed Heron Rd. westbound between Riverside Dr. and Prince of Wales Dr. for several hours to investigate. The road reopened Saturday morning.
