An Ontario Provincial Police officer is in hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a car just before 8:30 Saturday night.

The officer was standing outside his cruiser while conducting traffic stops, when a westbound car hit him on Indian Creek Road in Limoges east of Ottawa.

He was airlifted to the Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus and is in stable condition. A second officer was transported to the Montfort Hospital in Ottawa's east end.

Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The driver, 36-year-old Kirk Meldrum, has been charged with impaired and dangerous driving.

He is set to appear in court in October.
