A 52-year-old man who was badly beaten while he was collecting beer cans near the Prince of Wales rail bridge more than a week ago has died from his injuries.

Kenneth Dabene died early Monday morning after his family decided to take him off life support on Saturday.

"Why would somebody do that? My dad was so quiet . . . he didn't go out to do this. He didn't look for that. I know that," Laura Dabene told CTV Ottawa on Monday.

A passerby found Dabene unconscious near the rail bridge on the Ottawa River Parkway, east of Parkdale Avenue, on July 18 at about 11 p.m.

Gus Tavares, 46, was charged with attempted murder in connection with the assault.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, where his charges will be upgraded to second-degree murder.

Police say their investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact Ottawa police at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS.
