A 16-year-old Cornwall student is dead after an alleged stabbing incident at school.

Police were called to T.R. Leger School at the St. Lawrence College Campus just before the noon hour on Monday.

The school was locked down for about an hour following the altercation and police are releasing few details about the incident.

"I can't get into specifics about it. It's sufficed to say it was an altercation between the two and a 16-year-old was allegedly stabbed," Blake Paquin of the Cornwall Police told ctvottawa.ca.

Police say the 16-year-old male student was transported to hospital after the altercation where he later died.

Cornwall police have a 17-year-old male in custody.

Police say the youth was spotted leaving the school, running along a bike path following the incident. He was arrested without incident near McConnell Avenue after a short foot chase by a community patrol officer.

Police say charges for first-degree murder are pending. The youth remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Paquin said a portion of the school was still being treated as a crime scene late Monday afternoon.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act prevents police from releasing the names of those involved.
