A stretch of a major artery in Ottawa's west end reopened Wednesday morning following a two-vehicle collision that killed a 26-year-old male passenger Tuesday night.

The man was trapped in the wreckage and was pronounced dead at the scene when emergency workers arrived at an intersection at Terry Fox Drive between Hazeldean Road and Edgewater Street at about 9 p.m. His name has not been released.

The victim's girlfriend, who was driving the car, was extricated from the vehicle and transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 42-year-old male driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash remains in hospital in serious condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
