Friday's Roast Beef House & Piano Parlour in downtown Ottawa closed Saturday night with no intent on reopening.

Management says the recession hit hard and that it has been a struggle to fill the restaurant which has occupied the heritage building on Elgin Street for the last 37 years.

Regulars say they are shocked and deeply saddened to see the restaurant go.

"My husband passed away last year and the girls started getting me out. And from the first day I arrived here it felt like it was a second home" said patron Ulrike Daly.

Friday's has called Elgin Street home since 1972.

At the time, it was a move that saved the 137 year-old building from being demolished and turned into a parking lot.

Now, a new tenant  is set to takeover the space.

"From what I understand there is someone coming into the building," said manager Donna Seal. "Friday's is leaving and the landlord has someone new coming into the building."

There is no word on whom or what will occupy the building.
