The Ottawa Sun is reporting the death of Earl McRae, one of its writers and a prominent member of Canada's media family.

According to the Sun, Rae collapsed in the newsroom Saturday night and was rushed to hospital. Doctors were not able to revive him.

As the news broke Saturday, it quickly spread by word of mouth and the internet.

CTV Ottawa's Michael O'Byrne writes on Twitter "RIP Earl - great story teller - terrific guy. Elvis' biggest fan. Will miss ya buddy!!"

McRae was the co-founder of the Elvis Sighting society. It is a registered charity serving the Ottawa community for 17 years.

McRae wrote Sun columns for more than two decades. His career includes time with the Ottawa Journal, Toronto Star, Peterborough Examiner and Ottawa Citizen.

His friends say he will be greatly missed.

A gathering took place at the Newport Restaurant on Richmond Road where McRae frequented. It is owned by Moe Atallah; another co-founder of the Elvis Sighting Society.
