Nearly forty minor hockey teams spent a cold Saturday collecting and sorting through thousands of bottles and cans, fundraising for two local hockey families.

The bottle drive was organized by the Leitrim Minor Hockey Association, to help the Maveety and Wheeler families.

Hockey dad Jim Maveety is waiting for a heart transplant.

He is very ill and relies on a device that helps his heart pump blood.

Since Maveety got sick, it’s been tough on his family, both emotionally and financially.

Maveety has had to quit his job; the family has put their home on the market and moved in with his in-laws, and they have been faced with numerous hospital bills.

The bottle drive is also raising money for the Wheeler family.

36-year-old Evelyn Kindervater-Wheeler passed away of a sudden illness last month, leaving behind her husband and five kids.

The hockey organization says the bottle drive is a concrete way for them to help, to support two of their own families, letting them know they are not alone.

The teams collected bottles in the Riverside South and Findlay Creek neighbourhoods.

The organization hoped to raise about $10,000 for the two families to share.
