Ottawa's public library board says it will not give up on expanding service to Sundays, despite an order to cut $1 million from the library's operating budget.

The city's audit committee ordered the board to cut $1 million from the library's $35-million operating budget to help keep the increase to next year's property tax just under four per cent.

The board shaved off $700,000 from its budget on Monday. However, board members say they want to use the extra money to expand library service to Sundays in the summer.

The city is considering other cost-saving measures including hiking OC Transpo fares and cutting a crime prevention program.

The city's budget will be tabled to council on Dec. 9. Council is expected to finalize the budget in January.
