Public transit workers in Toronto are set to be declared an essential service under legislation introduced in the Ontario legislature today.

Premier Dalton McGuinty says the province has received a request from Toronto city council to take away the right to strike from Toronto Transit Commission workers.

McGuinty says the government consulted with workers and heard from Toronto residents before deciding to introduce the bill.

No similar legislation can be tabled to prevent OC Transpo drivers from striking because the capital's bus service is under federal jurisdiction since buses travel across provincial borders.
