TORONTO - Environment Minister John Gerretsen says staff from his ministry were not the target of a police raid on a government office block last week.

Gerretsen is the first Liberal cabinet minister to speak publicly about last Thursday's raid on the Macdonald Block -- a Toronto office complex that houses 13 government ministries and agencies.

Attorney General Chris Bentley says he can't comment on the case, and won't say if staff from his ministry were the target of the Ontario Provincial Police corruption probe.

A government source on Saturday said the investigation by the force's anti-rackets branch did not involve any elected officials or political staff.

However, no one from the Liberal cabinet will go on the record to say which ministries were the subject of the last Thursday's police raid.

The Opposition says by not speaking up the Liberals are allowing thousands of civil servants to remain under a cloud of suspicion while the criminal investigation is conducted.

Police also refuse to say which ministries were targeted as they look into allegations of "irregular" financial dealings between some public servants and outside vendors.
