CTV News reported Monday sweltering temperatures at two apartment buildings on Pinecrest Road put the people living there at risk.

Now, the landlord of Homestead Land Holdings Ltd. says it is working to get the problem fixed.

Unbearable temperatures pushed Barby Clement to reach out to CTV Ottawa on Monday. The heat had reached as high as 30 C.

The city is now under a heat alert and says the most vulnerable are children, seniors, and the chronically ill.

Clement is confined to a wheelchair and suffers from asthma. She described her conditions as a living hell.

The company that owns the buildings at 1300 and 1310 Pinecrest Rd. were not immediately available for comment Monday.

Tuesday, though, the landlord spoke up; and so did other tenants.

"We do apologize for this inconvenience and we will have it up and running shortly," said Malcolm Potvin of Homestead.

Tenant Irina Shivrina though says she can't do anything with an apology. "This is very dangerous for animals and everybody, when you can't breathe and can't sleep, everyone gets nervous, and sorry, what you can do with sorry? Nothing."

The property management company is not violating any laws.

"The law dictates we have to provide heat until June 15 and in Ottawa you never know, I've seen it snow in long weekend," said Potvin.

Regardless, the landlord said the air conditioning would be turned on Tuesday at 1300 Pinecest Rd. The other building will have to wait a few more days. It is undergoing a $250,000 upgrade to the cooling system.
