KINGSTON, Ont. - Police say charges are pending against two inmates at Kingston's maximum security prison after they allegedly attempted an elaborate, daylight escape.

The two prisoners had made it onto the roof of a building near a wall of the complex and secured a rope to the wall before they were caught.

Kingston police Const. Mike Menor says it seems the prisoners didn't have any means to get down the 10-metre wall once they reached it.

He says the prisoners gave up the escape and eventually were spotted by corrections staff.

They had made a grappling hook from clamps and wire and constructed the rope out of boot laces, electrical cords and electrical wire.

Corrections Canada says staff prevented the escape and public safety was never at risk.
