Kingston police have arrested a 53-year-old man on assault charges after allegedly stabbing another person in a local bar.

Police say they responded to reports of an assault with a weapon in the area of Princess Street and Bayridge Drive at around 10:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Officers found a victim had been slashed with a knife and was suffering from injuries to their hand and torso.

An investigation determined the accused and another person got into a verbal argument inside the bar and the suspect brandished a knife.

The victim had tried to break up the fight and was subsequently assaulted by the suspect, police say

Police located the suspect at the scene after other patrons came to aid the victim.

The man was arrested and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, possession of weapons dangerous and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was taken to the Kington police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
