A 23-year-old Kingston man faces several criminal charges after allegedly beating and choking his former live-in partner on Monday morning.

Police were called to a Union Street residence, where they found the female victim.

According to police, the accused arrived at her home just after midnight and forced his way inside without permission. The couple had recently ended a year-long relationship.

The man allegedly pushed the woman into a chair while arguing over possession of a dog. He than grabbed her by the throat.

The woman broke free and ordered him out, but the suspect forced her to the ground and choked her again, police said. He also kneed her in the stomach, causing her to lose breath.

Eventually the man left, but not before throwing a perfume bottle at the victim's face, hitting her in the eye.

The woman suffered minor injuries. The suspect fled the area.

A man was arrested at his home without incident 90 minutes later. He has been charged with assault, assault with a weapon, forcible entry, and choking.
