A Kingston construction company has been fined $52,000 after workers were exposed to asbestos in 2007.

David J. Cupido Construction Ltd. received the fine last week after pleading guilty under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Material containing asbestos was discovered on May 22, 2007 after work started in a building at 1211 John Counter Blvd. in Kingston.

A provincial Ministry of Labour investigation concluded the workers were exposed, and that the company failed to check for asbestos before construction began.

Under provincial law, Cupido also has to pay a 25-per-cent surcharge for a special fund to assist victims of crime.
