Residents fought a valiant fight, but the Canada Post community mailboxes have made their way to Kanata.

Many were opposed to the change in service, ending door-to-door delivery to about 7,900 households on October 20, 2014. Some residents were unhappy with the placement of the new boxes and the proximity to their homes.

The West-end community is the first in Ottawa to make the switch to community mailboxes. Newer developments in the city never had door-to-door to service.

Canada Post is rolling out the transition in phases, hoping to have all five million door-to-door delivery addresses switched over by 2019. The mail corporation says only one-third of all Canadian homes still get mail at their door.

Canada Post says the change is necessary to accommodate more online shopping, the decline in traditional mail and cost savings.

A third-party company You Have Mail is hoping to pick up the slack while making a profit. The Winnipeg-based company will deliver door-to-door twice a week in Winnipeg, Calgary and Fort McMurray for $20. The company hopes to be in operation in Quebec by 2015. There are no plans as of yet to offer the service in Ontario.
