The warm-up to St. Patrick's Day really got going with a green wave of floats launched from Ottawa City Hall Saturday morning.

The 30th annual parade went from Laurier Street to Lansdowne Park a full week before the March 17 holiday.

"We all have a little bit of Irish in us" said one parade-watcher. "As soon as you like a little bit of beer, you're Irish."

"St. Patty's Day means getting together with a bunch of friends and having fun," said another.

The parade gave those who lined the route a chance to test out their shamrock-coloured outfits for next Saturday.

"Since I don't have any hair I borrowed some and put it on," said OC Transpo driver Frank Fata about his green wig.

"I got my little cowboy hat here and my darling wife bought me some suspenders to wear on this special day and my son got me a tie."

Fata said he always makes sure to pick up residents of St. Patrick's long-term care home on this day.

"For several years here I've been picking up residents from St. Pat's and taking them out for a stroll on a nice sunny day . . . you can't get more Irish than St. Patrick's home.

Irish Week in Ottawa began Thursday with a flag raising and continues through the week, with events like a comedy night and book reading.

For many, the parade is a centerpiece of the week.

"I think Ottawa's done a great job for today, I mean it's a lot of organizing," said one person at the parade.

"It's a little cold but it's a lot of fun and everyone enjoys it, it's awesome," said another.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland who drove all the snakes from the island country, according to urban legend.

March 17 is the anniversary of his death.
