Fire officials were at St. Laurent Shopping Centre Saturday following a fire that sent ceiling tiles into some of the stores and caused $100,000 in roof damage.

Part of the mall was closed Saturday morning as work crews cleaned up the mess, says platoon chief Neil Warren, although it was still open for business.

A call came in around 10:25 p.m. Friday reporting a fire on the roof, says Warren. The fire department sent 20 trucks and 55 firefighters to the scene to control the fire, which was put out by about 11:15 p.m.

There was substantial water damage to some of the stores and contents damage is still not known, says Warren.

Media reports say the fire started above the Sears store and that the row of outlets between the CIBC Bank and the Laura Secord are shut down for the investigation. The entrance at Toys 'R' Us is also said to be closed.

The shopping centre is 971,000 square feet and contains 195 fashion, retail and food stores, most notably The Bay, Sears, Toys 'R' Us and Sport Chek.
