One inmate is dead and two others are in hospital with serious injuries after a fight at a maximum security prison near Kingston.

Ontario Provincial Police say the inmates were participating in regular recreation activities when the fight broke out in the gymnasium at the Millhaven Institution at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Correctional Service officers intervened by using chemical agents and firing shots to gain control of the situation, according to authorities.

Prisoner Jordon Trudeau, 29, died of his injuries. Two other inmates remain in Kingston General Hospital with serious injuries.

A post-mortem on Trudeau's body will be conducted at the Ottawa Hospital on Tuesday.

The prison remains under lockdown. The Joint Forced Penitentiary Squad is investigating.
