Police are continuing to investigate the suspicious death of a seven-year-old girl at her home northwest of Gatineau Saturday, but say the father was not involved.

Quebec police say MRC des Collines were called to 80 chemin Barnes in Kingsmere around 1:30 p.m., where they found the girl unconscious and her mother seriously injured.

Both were taken to hospital where the girl was pronounced dead.

Neighbours said Murray and Katherine Fitzpatrick lived at the house with their daughter Sophie, who they adopted from China.

They said they're a loving family that they often saw spending time with their child.

"I remember them doing lots of fun things with Sophie, and Sophie dancing down the street," said Nancy Manning. "(They're) wonderful loving parents, very, very nice with Sophie. Took her skiing, took her everywhere."

Murray is a BMO financial advisor in the Byward Market.

Police said the father was the one who found the pair and was not involved in the incident.

"The father met with the investigators, had an interview, the investigators concluded he is not involved in the event," said Christine Coulombe with the Sûreté du Quebec.

They said they're waiting to talk to the mother, who is still hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries.

Police said whatever took place happened within the family, as they're not looking for any other suspects. The Sûreté du Quebec has taken over the investigation from MRC des Collines.

An autopsy will be conducted early this week.
