Hydro Ottawa has been fined $225,000 after an Ottawa worker was killed and two others injured on the job in 2012.

The workers were installing new hydro poles and wires on Moodie Dr. south of Fallowfield Rd. in March 2012.

Three workers were digging a hole when the boom of a work vehicle came within three metres of a live power line about 20 feet above the hole.

All three workers received electric shocks. One worker died of his injuries.

The Ministry of Labour investigated and found Hydro Ottawa guilty of violating three sections of the1.1543741 Constructions Project Regulation.

In 2013, Ottawa company Digsafe Inc., a sub-contractor and co-defendant, was fined $125,000. Digsafe was fined in violation of Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The company pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court has also imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge. It’s a requirement of the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge goes into a special provincial government fund to help victims of crime.
